There are finishes that have more to do with art than the object. The Diva Utopia Plume is one of these creations.
Born of exceptional know-how, it celebrates handcraft, time and materials. Featherwork becomes a language, transforming the speaker into a sensitive, delicate, living work of art.
THE FEATHER – A LIVING AND PRECIOUS MATERIAL
On the speaker side panels, the feather becomes a material of expression. Natural feathers, selected for their delicacy and ethical sourcing, create a vibrant surface. Dyed by hand with subtle colour gradation from midnight blue to black, they capture the light and interact with the shadows.
Each feather asserts its irregular features, its personality. This living material is not just for the eyes: it invites you to touch it and contemplate. Silky, ethereal and delicate, it gives the speaker a sculptural, organic presence.
FEATHERWORK – AN ARTISTIC PROFESSION
Featherwork, an age-old craft characterised by patience and delicacy, lies at the heart of this finish. It's a profession where every gesture is measured, almost meditative.
For this creation, the Focal Crafts workshop called on feather artist Béatrice Bost-Le Mouël, who carries on this subtle art on the border between tradition and contemporary creation. In her hands, the feather becomes an ornament, texture and emotion. Each speaker is designed as a visual narrative, where the uniqueness of feathers is not only accepted, but celebrated.
A HANDCRAFTED PRODUCT
This creation follows a demanding and entirely manual journey: a week's work is needed to cover a side panel. These are prepared in matt black paint at the Focal Ébénisterie Bourgogne workshop. Each feather is then sorted, cleaned, separated from the down and dyed by hand.
Three to four baths are needed to achieve perfect colour gradation, carefully thought out beforehand and tweaked. After rinsing and steaming, the feather regains its volume and natural shine.
Then comes the assembly stage, done back to front, feather by feather. Fixing starts at the bottom; each new feather covers the previous one in an upward motion. The sizes are deliberately varied to create rhythm and movement. Final glueing is subtle and controlled, preserving the suppleness and softness of the material. It's a work of art, where movement and material interact in perfect harmony.
A UNIQUE AND RARE PIECE
Because every feather is different, no two Diva Utopia Plume speakers are the same. This world-first creation conveys the mark of time, the hand of man and the attention paid to every detail. It also embodies a vision where high technology interacts with French craftsmanship. A rare piece of silent, enduring beauty.
"Working on a feather finish for an exceptional high-fidelity speaker was a first for me, and a challenge. A speaker is a unique object that can be handled, which means you have to be extra meticulous when attaching each feather, one by one. A fascinating piece of work, resulting in a unique and dreamlike final creation.”
