OPC+

Optimum Phase Crossover

Another key innovation linked to 1995's Grande Utopia, OPC crossover (Optimum Phase Crossover), stems from a troublingly simple thought: a crossover is acoustically perfect, in phase as in amplitude, when it only filters and in no way corrects a transducer fault. This implies that loudspeakers must have a linear and extended bandwidth well beyond the crossover frequency, so as not to interfere. This is a permanent approach at Focal: solve the problem at source so as not to have to electrically correct mechanical defects that mask a problem without ever completely solving it.

Mastering the response curve

The OPC+ is part of this approach. For the first time, it offers the ability to adapt the loudspeaker's response curve to room acoustics, customizing the tonal balance according to reverberation time linked to room size, the nature of light or matt surfaces, furnishings, or simply individual sound preferences.

Custom settings

Fine adjustments can be made to bass, low-midrange, midrange and tweeter without compromising musical integrity. In fact, the additional components required for these corrections are systematically placed in parallel with the resistors, chokes and capacitors used in the original nominal configuration. These components have been systematically listened to blind, so as not to be influenced by the fashions of the moment, nor by well-known brands. In the end, the 4-way crossover of the Grande Utopia EM is divided into three blocks in the body of the loudspeaker.
