The cone, the centerpiece of a loudspeaker, is at the heart of our acoustic engineers' research. Shape and materials are essential for high-fidelity reproduction. In 1986, our teams unveiled an aramid fiber sandwich cone, recognizable by its unique yellow color. It has been extensively updated over the years while retaining the characteristics that made it so successful. Today, it consists of an ultra-light foam core sandwiched between a layer of aramid fibers and a layer of glass fibers. It combines the three key factors of a loudspeaker cone: rigidity, lightness, and damping, for precise, dynamic, and uncolored sound.

While the material of a cone is essential, its shape is just as important. Focal engineers developed an "M" profile for the "W" fiberglass cone. This "M" profile is the result of many years of research and our expertise in cone geometries. Made from a single piece (without a core cover), it allows for, among other things, a significant reduction in harmonic distortion, better sound dispersion, and optimal power handling. At the rear of the membrane is the spider, which holds the lower part of the cone. By working on this essential element of the speaker and in particular by developing a spider with a progressive profile, our engineers have achieved better damping of the movements of the sandwich membrane, greatly improving the linearity, precision and dynamics of the sound.

While our engineers are experts in developing exclusive cones, they also innovate for all the elements that make up the speakers, such as the suspension that connects the cone to the chassis and whose performance is essential to control. Created in 2015, TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) technology with harmonic damping consists of the addition of finely positioned toroidal weights, allowing the suspension to be stabilized for ever greater sound neutrality. This technology enhances the midrange and the erratic behavior of the suspension between 1kHz and 2KHz.
