Focal sound on board the DS 9 fastback

Power, technology and co-design

The Focal Electra hi-fi system on board DS 9 M.Y. 2023 features 14 loudspeakers and 16-channel active amplification: an immersive listening experience, with precise, refined sound. It comes as standard on the Opéra and Esprit de Voyage versions.

Expressive, DS 9 model 2023 combines power and comfort. It embodies French luxury at the service of travel. The FOCAL ELECTRA system was naturally chosen by both brands for the hi-fi option.

The teams worked together to define the tailor-made locations for each loudspeaker : in the front, loudspeakers and a center channel provide a three-dimensional sound image; in the rear, loudspeakers in the doors and on the tablet holders ensure cinema-like immersion. The powerful subwoofer leads the way with authority.

Two listening modes are available: "All-Passengers", a stereo mode optimized for each passenger, and "Front Optimized", a unique experience that increases the width and depth of the front stereo soundstage. The sound is immersive and lively ; vocals are clear and detailed; bass impactful.

DS 9 is the car for every comfort. The range has evolved with a third Opéra trim level and the adoption of the Esprit de Voyage collection.

Noble materials - Nappa leather, Alcantara upholstery... - and authentic Focal sound blend together in this setting of luxury and silence.

Acoustic glazing, a vibration-eliminating welded body and designer Focal Electra grilles: acoustic comfort has been considered from the outset.

This top-of-the-range system incorporates three exclusive technologies -Polyglass membrane, TNF Tweeter and Power Flower™ Subwoofer- and is composed of 14 loudspeakers:

  • four 165 mm Polyglass woofers/midrange in the doors;
  • an 80 mm Polyglass center channel positioned in the dashboard;
  • four inverted dome tweeters in the rearview mirror gussets and rear doors;
  • a 200 mm Power Flower™ subwoofer integrated into the rear deck;
  • satellite channels using two 80 mm Polyglass midrange drivers and two inverted dome tweeters.

Active 16-channel amplification (690 Watts) in boosted Class D technology precisely drives this system, for ever more sensations.

This exclusive Focal technology is used on the 4 x 165 mm woofers/mid-range loudspeakers installed in the vehicle doors, as well as on the center channel positioned in the middle of the dashboard.

Thanks to the application of fine glass microbeads to a cellulose pulp membrane, the Polyglass membrane combines the excellent damping of paper with the rigidity of glass.

A compromise between mass, rigidity and damping, resulting in a frequency response curve with exemplary linearity for high-definition sound reproduction.

The system embeds a 20 cm Power Flower™ subwoofer positioned in the vehicle's frame structure, behind the trunk side trim.

Directly inherited from the technologies of Utopia's iconic loudspeakers, the Power Flower™ replaces the simple ferrite usually used on loudspeakers and is the source of a powerful magnetic flux.

The result: stable, healthy bass reproduction down to extreme sound pressure levels.

The system is equipped with four aluminum inverted dome tweeters positioned in the rear-view mirror gussets and rear doors.

This technology, patented by Focal for over 35 years, guarantees precise, detailed treble reproduction thanks to its omnidirectional diffusion and light weight.

The Poron surround suspension, derived from the tweeters of the emblematic Utopia line, is very light, for enhanced sensitivity. What's more, its flexibility allows the speaker to be used at lower frequencies. Placed under the aluminum dome, it does not interfere with the signal emitted by the latter, and produces no distortion. The inverted dome shape offers controlled directionality.

Passengers are at the heart of the sound.

The sound is precise and balanced, with a controlled, dynamic infrasound and rich, delicate treble.
